Iraqi ordinary passport holders living in Australia need a visa before visiting Dubai for tourism. An Australian student visa, work visa, or permanent residency does not give an Iraqi passport holder automatic UAE visa on arrival.
Start by checking the visa category available for your trip. Prepare your Iraqi passport and national ID alongside your Australian visa record, then confirm the document checklist before submitting your application.
Which passport will you use for Dubai?
Nationality and residence are separate details: enter Iraq as your passport nationality and Australia as your current country of residence when the form asks.
This guidance covers ordinary Iraqi passports. If you hold an Australian passport, check its entry conditions instead. If you use a refugee travel document or certificate of identity, have that exact document assessed before selecting an ordinary-passport application.
Australian residence alone does not place an Iraqi passport within the special UAE entry route available to certain other nationalities. Confirm the route for your own document — even if a friend with a different passport received a visa on arrival.
Keep your Iraqi national ID with the passport documents
The standard single-entry tourist checklist specifically includes a country-of-origin identity card for Iraqi applicants. Australian residence evidence serves a different purpose — do not assume it replaces the Iraqi ID.
Passport: a clear information-page copy, with at least six months' validity for this tourist route.
Iraqi national ID: readable copies of the requested sides, including any information needed to identify the holder.
Recent photograph: a clear colour passport-style image.
Travel and insurance: an onward or UAE departure ticket and medical cover valid in the UAE.
For the online application, also have your passport-cover image, Australian visa evidence, and hotel or host details ready.
What if you do not have the requested ID? Explain what you hold before paying or submitting. Ask the application team whether it can be accepted and what else is needed — uploading a different card without explanation can leave the identity check unresolved.
Check names across the documents. Use the English name fields printed in your passport. If the spelling on your Iraqi ID or Australian record differs, flag it before submission and ask whether a translation or supporting explanation is required. Never edit a scan or change the spelling yourself.
Show your current Australian visa status
You can check current visa details through Home Affairs' VEVO service. Use the record that applies now — especially after a visa change or passport renewal — and ask which format the application team needs for your residence evidence.
Students: keep your student visa details ready and plan the trip around study commitments. An Australian address or student card alone does not show your visa conditions; supply enrolment evidence if requested.
Workers and temporary residents: give your current Australian visa status, even if an employer or agent is handling a new application. Check your planned departure and return fit that status before finalising the holiday.
PR holders: your Iraqi passport determines the UAE entry route. Separately check the travel facility and return conditions on your Australian permanent visa — permission to stay in Australia and permission to return after an overseas trip need separate attention.
Bridging or restricted visas: check your conditions with Home Affairs before leaving Australia. A Dubai visa does not change those conditions.
Choose a visa around your Dubai stay
Your visa needs to cover both the length of the visit and the number of times you enter the UAE. The standard single-entry tourist service lists 30- and 60-day stays — see our 2026 price guide — and the visa types overview. Check the separate 14-day service before choosing it; Australian residence does not make an Iraqi passport eligible for the special residence-based 14-day entry category.
A Dubai stopover or a separate holiday?
If Dubai is your holiday destination, provide the arrival and departure dates for that stay. If you are visiting another country afterwards, use the actual onward itinerary rather than describing the trip as a return to Australia.
Check any second Dubai stop carefully: a single-entry visa does not provide another entry once you have left. If you want to visit the city on both legs, confirm arrangements for both entries before choosing a category.
Changing flights without entering Dubai: a connection entirely within the international transit area generally does not require a UAE entry visa — confirm baggage and ticket arrangements with your airline. A hotel visit outside the airport, baggage collection through immigration, or a transfer between DXB and DWC involves entering the UAE.
Family members may have different requirements. Check each person's passport: an Iraqi-passport traveller and an Australian-passport relative can need different entry arrangements on the same booking. Enter each traveller separately with their own documents.
How to start your application from Australia
1. Confirm the available route. Give your Iraqi passport nationality, Australian visa status, document type, and intended dates — and ask whether the selected category can currently be submitted for your circumstances.
2. Enter your traveller details. Match names, passport number, and dates to the travel document. Use an email address you check regularly.
3. Attach the requested files. Review the national ID, passport, and residence evidence for readability. Include each accompanying applicant separately.
4. Review the quote and submit. Check the service, number of entries, total charge, and payment terms. Keep your application reference for follow-up.
Respond to further document requests using your application reference. If you have already applied through another provider, say so before opening another file. Confirm the cost and timeline for your file, and remember: payment or an application reference does not mean a visa has been issued.
Questions from Iraqi residents in Australia
Can I begin the process while I am in Australia?
Yes — start with an online eligibility and document check from Australia, after confirming the category is available for your circumstances.
Can I upload my Australian residence record instead of my Iraqi ID?
Do not treat them as interchangeable — prepare both for review. If the requested Iraqi document is unavailable, explain this and ask what can be accepted before submitting.
My Iraqi ID is in Arabic. Do I need a translation?
Send a clear copy for the document check and ask whether a translation is required. Keep the original scan unaltered.
Can I use a refugee travel document with these steps?
Have the exact travel document assessed first — this page's ordinary-passport guidance does not confirm acceptance of refugee travel documents. Check UAE entry and Australian return arrangements for that document.
What if I renew my passport after starting the application?
Tell the team before they submit the file — or immediately if it has already been submitted. Provide the new passport details and ask what must be updated, and check your Australian immigration record separately.
