If you're flying through Dubai, you have three real options: stay in the airport, get a transit visa and step out, or get a tourist visa and make it a proper visit. Here's how to choose.
Stay airside: no visa needed
If your layover is short and you don't plan to leave the airport, you don't need a visa at all. Dubai International is built for long layovers — lounges, rest areas, and enough food options to survive most connections.
Transit visa: the stopover upgrade
If your layover is 12 hours or more and you'd rather see the city than the terminal, a transit visa is the answer. The 48-hour version suits a single overnight; the 96-hour version turns a long stopover into a genuine mini-holiday — Burj Khalifa, the souks, a desert safari, then back to the airport. You'll need a confirmed onward flight.
Tourist visa: the real visit
If you're staying longer than four days, or this trip is about the UAE rather than passing through it, get a tourist visa. The 30-day single-entry is the classic choice for holidays; the 60-day versions suit longer family visits.
When the answer is neither
Some nationalities can enter the UAE visa-free or with a visa on arrival — check before you apply for anything. And if your transit is very short (under 8 hours), the airport is honestly the better plan: by the time you clear immigration and reach the city, you'd be turning straight around.
